Job boards in Germany: what expats should know (without a fake ranking)
No single board covers Germany. Channel types, public, private, employer-direct, and how to combine them if you are searching from abroad or in English.
Job boards in Germany: what expats should know (without a fake ranking)
There is no "best job board for Germany" that works for every role and region.
Boards differ in inventory, UX, and business model, not in an objective
league table that applies to everyone.
This text describes types and well-known names as illustrations. It does
not invent market shares or hit rates. Portals change quickly; revisit your
channels every few months.
Three basic types
| Type | Examples (illustration) | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Public / state | Bundesagentur für Arbeit | Broad DE inventory, regional |
| Private generalist | StepStone, Indeed (search surface), XING Jobs | Reach, marketing |
| Employer-direct | Personio, Greenhouse, Lever career pages | Original posting, no aggregator |
Add niche boards (tech, remote-only, industry) and networking (LinkedIn
etc.), social, not the same as a board.
What actually differs
Inventory
Each board shows only what was listed there. Duplicates are normal: the
same role on the BA, StepStone, and the company site.
Keywords vs. profile
Classic boards filter on what you type. Agents rank against a profile
with reasons, see job matching.
Employer economics
Paid slots influence where a role appears, not how qualified you are.
Freshness
Lists go stale. High freshness: review your default channels quarterly.
A sensible minimum for Germany
- BA job exchange: public inventory.
- One private generalist: habit and role dependent.
- Career pages of target employers: wish list.
- Optional agent: merge sources.
AI job search explains aggregation: you search vs. sources
are collected for you.
What YourJobAgent ingests: and what it does not
Server-side sources include the Bundesagentur, Arbeitnow, remote feeds,
Nomado24, and company ATS from a registry, nine connectors in total.
Not server-side: LinkedIn, Indeed, StepStone. You may use them yourself;
they are not a substitute for the aggregated feeds in the product.
Typical mistakes
- One board = whole market: gaps are guaranteed.
- Only aggregators: miss employers who list only on their own site.
- "Top 10 board" lists without methodology: treat as marketing.
Summary
Compare types and combinations, not myth rankings. In Germany: public BA +
private board + career pages, optionally an agent on top.
